Rescued baby gorilla Zeytin recovers from smuggling ordeal

A baby gorilla, rescued last year from a plane’s shipping container at Istanbul airport, may soon be returned to his native Nigeria.

The infant – named Zeytin in a public competition – was cared for at Turkey’s Polonezkoy Zoo while he underwent rehabilitation following his ordeal at the hands of smugglers. Zeytin has gained weight and grown taller since he was found in December.

Turkish authorities are seeking assurances from Nigeria that Zeytin will not be in danger from illegal traders when he returns to the country.
