Fireworks ignite as blaze hits Japanese festival launch boats

Launch barges caught fire after pyrotechnics landed on them during a summer fireworks festival in Japan’s city Yokohama on Monday evening.

The blaze broke out on two boats being used to launch the fireworks. Five workers were rescued after jumping into the sea, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. One was taken to hospital with a minor injury.

Event organisers had planned to launch about 20,000 fireworks in 25 minutes as part of the festival, but the event was cancelled following the fire, local media has reported.
