Check-in desk set alight in Milan Malpensa airport

A busy Italian airport has been partially evacuated after a man set fire to a check-in area. Footage shared on social media showed the blaze engulf a check-in desk as passengers fled the area.

A man appeared to use a hammer to bang an advertisement screen close by. He was and was then approached by another man shouting “get down” before hitting him on the head with a fire extinguisher.

Others surrounded the man as he was pinned to the ground, calling for police.

Fabiola Gomes, who filmed the video, told the BBC she was at the airport to collective her relative before seeing “fire everywhere” and a “boy with a hammer” who was hitting the counter.

People “passing by” stopped him and police arrived 10 minutes later, she said, adding that she was “very scared”.
